What’s in it for me?

20170216_152818Yesterday we had the opportunity to talk about the effort  that collaboration needs: it needs time, it needs an open listening, to be clear when we communicate, to clarify misunderstandings,… We also talked about the importance of the CONTEXT in which we work. There are environments that foster communication and collaboration an others, that inhibit them.

The key point is, to what extent each of us can contribute to the creation of a favorable context, even if the main responsability is not ours. It is very usual to talk about the context as if we were not part of it. We believe that even in the most difficult contexts, there is always “something” we can do. Can we make any difference depending of what we say, what we ask for, how we call meetings, how we participate in meetings, how we communicate with our teams, etc.?

We believe that one of the key issues to collaborate better is to connect ourselves with the benefits that it can bring for us (usually, long term benefits). That is the exercise we did yesterday in which we were not very succesful being “specific” 😉

We invite you to watch this TED TALK video, that you might find interesting, “Collaboration is an individual effort“. It is the personal view of a young woman that declares not being naturally inclined to collaborate with others. In our opinion, her testimony is very “real” and practical.  It will take you 12 mins to watch it.

We also invite you to draw your own networking picture. You might find some people (inside CIC or from other organizations) with which you could intentionally build a stronger or better relationship.

And we also encourage you to use the simple question we practiced in the session with different people:  What can I do to make your working life easier or more productive?”  You might get interesting answers.

Thanks for your participation.  Any input you can give us for the rest of the process, will be very welcome. It will help us to help you learn something valuable for your working life.  In the next four weeks, we will send you other readings about trust, communication, meetings, etc…

p.d. If you wish to post your comments on the blog either about yesterday´s session or around this Ted Talk, we can create a conversation. We are aware of the difficulty to make time for everything, so if it does not happen in the blog, we will talk in the next classroom session.
